Any of these fine actresses could have made the part work. They just didn’t happen to be choices that excited the director as much as Laura Dern, who brought to the part her own special quality: her vivid intelligence, her unusual sense of timing (she always seems to wait half a beat longer than you’d expect), her feistiness, her sudden charm. And, unlike some leading ladies or ingenues, she’d be willing to run through the brambles getting dirty and disheveled. So when the picture she was shooting in Canada finally wrapped, I was happy to set up a meeting.
